The next generation of mobile networks, paired with new and unprecedented service support and a user comforting device feeling is a wide-spanning research that leads to our “Mobile Adventure”. In this adventure we place the user’s demand right in the centre of our attention and free our spirit towards novel and exciting multimedia services. Services that are provisioned in a seamless user experience and embedded in an environment that concerns all facets of specific users’ interests and situations.

This requires both, meticulous research and high-flying dreams to imagine what could be possible within the information society for the years to come. New generations of mobile systems will expand communications as we know it today and transition from an information infrastructure to a truly daily life supporting environment.

We researchers of DOCOMO Euro-Labs are destined to substantially contribute to those challenges that go along.

Abstracting from current technologies we aim at designing a unifying architecture that structures all parts of the next generation mobile system and covers all aspects from radio transmission to applications. We advocate open platforms on every layer and include open APIs between layers as well as layer independent virtualization. We support operator managed overlay networking and reconfigurability and adaptability of software components to environment and context changes. Our solutions allow for dynamic enhancement of functional features in building blocks and include optimization principles based on cross-layer design.

The work at Euro-Labs encompasses, but is not limited to semantic services, context representation, reasoning and management and mobile services and device security. We expand service continuity beyond cellular networks and support the conversion of heterogeneous radio networks. We create solutions that look after efficient interference coordination and management, multi-hop relaying and superior Multi User MIMO solutions.

Through a continuous update of projects, activities and research directions, promising options for future strategic technology and business decisions are embraced. We are determined to prove that excellent research can be one of the main driving forces of technology advances and future market success.
